  Background

The Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Institute is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that was founded in 2004 and has successful operated an annual dragon boat race for charity, as well as hosted the United States most successful National Dragon Boat Racing Championship in 2006.  The Championship in 2006 was used as a platform for the International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) to scout out the City of Tampa, and the Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Institute as a potential host of the 2011 IDBF World Dragon Boat Racing Championship.

In 2007 a Tampa delegation traveled to Sydney, Australia to present a bid on behalf of the United States Dragon Boat Federation to host the 10th World Championship.  It was at that time that the International Dragon Boat Federation awarded the event to Tampa.

The Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Institute continues to operate their annual event, as well as ancillary events throughout each year.  A separate committee of businessmen and women was formed specifically to plan and execute the 10th IDBF World Dragon Boat Racing Championship.

The International Dragon Boat Federation is the world governing body for the dragon boat sport.  Dragon boating is one of the world’s fastest growing sports.  As a member of the General Association of International Sports Federations, the IDBF is the only body having the legal right to hold Dragon Boat Racing World Championships.

With the objectives of encouraging the development of the sport of Dragon Boat Racing; and of maintaining its Asian cultural, historical and religious traditions; and of strengthening the bonds of friendship that unite those who practice it, the controlling associations of Australia; the People’s Republic of China; Chinese Taipei; Hong Kong; Indonesia; Italy; Malaysia; Norway; the Republic of the Philippines; Singapore; the United Kingdom and the United States founded the International Dragon Boat Federation on the 24th June 1991, in Hong Kong.
